Connection speeds

Hey all. First post, but I have an issue I can’t seem to figure out. I’ve always had a slow connection speed to PSN but it wasn’t so slow that I couldn’t play online. But it’s always been noticeably slower. We’re talking 20mbps download speed on games, but when I download on Xbox, there’s at least 100+mbps download speeds. I’ve tried port forwarding, QoS on my router, etc. all the tricks to try to make the PS5 faster.

The reason why it’s bothering me now, is because I got a portal for Christmas courtesy of the wife. It works but has noticeable slowdown and connection drops, as well as resolution drops if I play for over a minute. My downstream and upstream are both less than 1mbps, even when standing next to my router on a 5Ghz channel. Which is insanity to me. Especially given the fact that I can stream Steam directly to my phone without any noticeable drops in resolution or connection standing far away from the router. Note my pc is streaming over wifi and my ps5 is directly hardwired to the router. At this point, I’m thinking it’s my PS5, but could my ISP be throttling Sony servers? It makes zero sense why all my other electronics work perfectly fine, yet my PlayStation struggles to keep up. It’s been that way since I’ve had the PlayStation. My next step is to get a new router and modem to see if it’s some weird hardware issue (since both are refurbished and getting old), or get one of my friend to bring their console over and test the internet here.

I just wanted to see if anyone had struggles with this and if there are any solutions.

Another user had similar problems & it turned out to be on Sony’s end.
Otherwise are you connected via Ethernet or WiFi? If WiFi then try with Ethernet connection.
Have you added the PS5‘s & the Portal’s MAC address to the allow list of the router?
Have you tried restarting the router?
Most likely the modem/router is too old.

What router do you have? It could be a router setting. It would also be helpful if you could post what information shows up if you go to Settings > Network > View Connection Status

Hey! Thanks for the reply! I just purchased a tp-link BE3900 and a cm2500 modem. I now get blazing fast speeds (apparently my router was bad) but I’m still only getting around 1mbps downstream and less than 1mbps upstream on my portal. A speed test done on the ps5 shows download speeds of 700mb and upload of 31.5mb. (1 gig internet) Not sure why the portal is still having an issue. If I kick all devices off the network, I might get around 4mbps downstream and less than 1 upstream. The portal is giving me a hard time.

I would check to make sure the Portal isn't connecting to the 2.4GHz frequency band.
